Darin Abbey, Director
On behalf of the three partners, Darin’s role is to assure that the Centre’s mission and values are reflected in the work that we do. As an Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Educator, Darin has galvanized his career around a passion for excellence in resuscitation, and an ongoing commitment to assuring improved clinician and patient outcomes. Central to this work is the belief that in healthcare, communication matters, and is best viewed as procedure that can be enhanced through consideration and simulation. Anna Macdonald, Manager
Anna runs day-to-day operations, coordinates research, and makes sure that the Centre is performing to the best of its capabilities. Anna is originally from New Zealand, and has a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Victoria. Anna has been involved in medical education for a number of years and believes that the simulation centre is an excellent tool for undergraduate nursing and medical students as well as for continuing education within Island Health. Jack Sjostrom, Simulation Technologist
Jack provides technical support for the Centre, maintains the equipment and provides operational training. Jack is originally from Sweden and has a background in nursing. Jack can be reached at simops@islandhealth.ca.
Monique Melendez, Simulation Support
Monique is responsible for scheduling and booking of simulation space and equipment as well as all of the administrative support for the Centre. Monique has a rich background of administration, healthcare and humanitarian work. She can be reached at cicsl@islandhealth.ca.
Tamara Young, Clinical Nurse Educator, Simulation (Island Health Simulation Program)
Tamara works to increase simulation capacity in Island Health by supporting the training and ongoing practice of simulation facilitators. She also provides educational consultation, collaborates with departments across the region to utilize simulation education, and assists programs with the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of simulation efforts up and down the island. Kent Soltys, Clinical Nurse Educator, REDEP Instructor, Simulation (North Island)
Kent is the regional emergency department education program (REDEP) instructor. REDEP is a program that trains emergency room nurses on the job in rural settings such as Port Hardy and Port McNeill. When not immersed in REDEP, he also supports simulation in the North of Vancouver Island. Kent is based in Campbell River and can be reached at kent.soltys@islandhealth.ca.
